Will Google's eLert Gadget Doom Email?

Just announced - a Google gadget that allows "reputable" entites to communicate with your Google Desktop instead of via email. The trick being that you subscribe and control the flow of information. No one (yet) can send you information unless you've given them permission. In theory this will eliminate junk mail and spammers from the equation. We'll see. The press release claims that users give feedback and anyone caught spamming is tossed out. Hmmm...
